ESXi ISO Download for 7.0, 8.0 and 9.x: Every Build, Including Patches

Where to download ESXi ISO images for 7.0, 8.0 and 9.x on the Broadcom Support Portal, a list of every build, and how to build an ISO for patch releases.

Short answer: Full ESXi releases (for example 8.0 Update 3) are on the Broadcom Support Portal as both ISO and offline bundle, under My Downloads > Products. Many patch releases are published under Solutions, and not every patch has an ISO. If you need an ISO for a patch build, generate it yourself: build it from the depot with PowerCLI New-IsoImage, or export a vSphere Lifecycle Manager cluster image as ISO. The download list below shows every ESXi 7.0, 8.0 and 9.x build and whether it comes as an ISO or as a patch.

ESXi ISO download from the Broadcom Support Portal

Per Broadcom KB 366685, the layout is:

Two catches. First, a version only appears if your account has an active entitlement for it. Second, Broadcom keeps only the most recent certified OEM custom ISO per release; older OEM images come from the server vendor’s site.

ISO or offline bundle?

  • ISO: fresh installs, interactive upgrades from CD/USB/virtual media, kickstart.
  • Offline bundle (zip): upgrading existing hosts with esxcli software profile update or importing into vSphere Lifecycle Manager. See the esxcli commands for ESXi 8.0 reference.

ESXi download list: every build for 7.0, 8.0 and 9.x

Every ESXi release from 7.0 GA to ESX 9.1.1, with its build number, release date and where Broadcom publishes it. ISO + bundle: under My Downloads > Products you get an ISO and an offline bundle. Bundle only: a patch under My Downloads > Solutions that comes only as an offline bundle (zip); for an ISO, build one yourself. The links open the Broadcom Support Portal, which asks you to sign in first. ESXi ISO and offline bundle file names

Searching the portal for the exact file name is the quickest way to find a release. The names follow a fixed pattern; ESX 9.x switched to a four-part version with a dot before the build.

Create an ESXi ISO for any patch release with PowerCLI

Image Builder in PowerCLI can build an ISO from an offline bundle or from the online depot. The New-IsoImage cmdlet takes a software specification (JSON) and one or more depots, and it keeps the base image, add-on and component metadata that vSphere Lifecycle Manager expects.

For the online depot you need a Broadcom download token (Support Portal > Generate Download Token). The depot URL format is https://dl.broadcom.com/<token>/PROD/COMP/ESX_HOST/main/vmw-depot-index.xml.

To add a vendor add-on or a driver, add its depot to -Depots and extend the spec with add_on (name, version) or components, as shown in the TechDocs page Create a Custom ESX ISO Image with VCF PowerCLI Cmdlets. To map a patch name to a build and version string, use the ESXi release notes for that patch.

Export an ESXi ISO from vSphere Lifecycle Manager

If a cluster already runs the image you want (base image, vendor add-on, drivers), export it. In the vSphere Client select the cluster, go to Updates > Hosts > Image, click the horizontal ellipsis, choose Export and select ISO (TechDocs: Export an Image). The ISO is meant for new installs. To reuse the image on a cluster in another vCenter, export it as JSON and as ZIP instead; an image can be exported in one format at a time.

Free ESXi ISO download

Broadcom made ESXi 8.0 Update 3e available as a free hypervisor (KB 399823). It is downloaded from the Support Portal, the license is embedded, and it comes without Broadcom support. KB 399823 gives build 24677879 for the free image, while the build list in KB 316595 shows 8.0 Update 3e as 24674464; check the build of the file you download.
