Short answer: ESXi 8.0 dropped support for a number of I/O devices that their vendors have end-of-lifed. Two groups are critical: every device that used the nmlx4_en driver (the driver no longer exists in 8.0), and some devices removed from the lpfc driver. Upgrading a host with one of them can cost you storage access, network access and host configuration. Search the table below for your NIC or HBA before you upgrade, and replace affected cards first (KB 88172).
Upgrading to ESXi 9.0? See ESXi 9.0 – Deprecated and unsupported devices (Restricted and End of Life devices, KB 391170).

More info KB – Devices deprecated and unsupported in ESXi 8.0 (88172)
Support for a number of I/O devices has been removed in ESXi 8.0 as a result of the devices being EOL’d by the device vendors.
If you proceed to upgrade to ESXi 8.0 from a host with a device supported by the nmlx4_en driver, or a device removed in the lpfc driver, the following non-recoverable consequences can occur:
- You may lose access to storage / data-stores
- You may lose network access
- You may lose previous configuration on the host
