Short answer: VCF 9.1.x can be reached directly from VCF 5.2.x and VCF 9.0.x. VVF 9.1.x upgrades from VVF 5.2 or 9.0.x, and vCenter and ESX are supported as a source at 8.x or 9.0.x. Anything older (VCF 4.x, 5.0, 5.1, vSphere 7) needs an intermediate hop first. On top of that, the 9.1 target build must have been released after your current build, so a very recent 5.2.x or 8.0 U3 patch can block an older 9.1.0.
This article covers only one question: which versions are allowed as a source for 9.1. For the full picture of VCF 9 upgrade and convergence scenarios, see my comprehensive VCF 9 upgrade paths overview.
Supported source versions for VCF 9.1 and VVF 9.1
According to Broadcom TechDocs (Upgrading to VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1.x and Upgrading to vSphere Foundation 9.1.x), the supported sources are:
| Current environment | Direct upgrade to 9.1.x? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| VCF 9.0.x | Yes | Upgrade in place to VCF 9.1.x |
| VCF 5.2.x | Yes | Upgrade management domain, then workload domains, to VCF 9.1.x |
| VCF 5.1, 5.0, 4.x | No | Upgrade the management domain and all workload domains to VCF 5.2.x first |
| VVF 9.0.x or VVF 5.2 | Yes | Upgrade to VVF 9.1.x |
| vCenter and ESX 8.x or 9.0.x (no SDDC Manager) | Yes | Upgrade as VVF, or converge into VCF 9.1 |
| vCenter or ESXi 7.x and older | No (not listed as a source) | Upgrade to vSphere 8.x first, then to 9.1 |
Component source versions (KB 440630)
Broadcom KB 440630, Upgrade Sequence and Related Issues for VMware Cloud Foundation and vSphere Foundation 9.1, lists the supported source version for each component. That matters most when you run vSphere with separately managed Aria products and want to land on 9.1.
| Component | Supported source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| vCenter, ESX | 8.x, 9.0.x | Exact builds are still subject to the release-date rule |
| NSX | 4.x | If NSX is present in a non-VCF environment, the VCF Installer converge workflow is the path |
| SDDC Manager | VCF 5.2.x, 9.0.x | Upgraded via VCF Operations, then lifecycle workflows |
| Aria Operations / VCF Operations | Aria Operations 8.x, VCF Operations 9.0.x | In-place upgrade |
| Aria Automation | 8.x | In-place upgrade to VCF Automation 9.1 |
| Aria Operations for Logs | 8.x | Log migration to VCF 9.1 log management |
| Aria Operations for Networks | 6.x | Only through VCF Operations fleet lifecycle workflows |
The release-date rule: why VCF 5.2.4 cannot upgrade to 9.1.0
Version numbers alone are not enough. TechDocs states that you can only upgrade to a target version released after the release date of your current version. VCF enforces this during upgrade validation. The documented examples:
| Source (release date) | Target (release date) | Result |
|---|---|---|
| VCF 5.2.0 (25 Jun 2024) | VCF 9.1.0 (11 May 2026) | Supported |
| VCF 5.2.4 (27 May 2026) | VCF 9.1.0 (11 May 2026) | Not supported, source is newer than target |
| VCF 5.2.4 (27 May 2026) | VCF 9.1.1 (03 Sep 2026) | Supported |
| vCenter 8.0 Update 3j (27 May 2026) | VVF 9.1.0 (11 May 2026) | Not supported |
Practical consequence: if you patched vCenter or ESX to the latest 8.0 U3 build for security reasons, plan to go to the newest 9.1.x maintenance release, not 9.1.0.
Upgrade paths for older environments
- VCF 4.x, 5.0 or 5.1: upgrade every domain to VCF 5.2.x, then upgrade to VCF 9.1.x.
- vSphere 7.x (standalone or VVF): upgrade vCenter and ESXi to 8.x first, then to 9.1.x. Check hardware compatibility for ESX 9 before you start.
- vSphere 8.x with NSX 4.x and Aria products: upgrade the Aria components in place, then converge into VCF 9.1 with the VCF Installer.
VVF 9.1 upgrade order
For vSphere Foundation, TechDocs prescribes this sequence:
- Aria Operations / VCF Operations and Cloud Proxy
- vCenter
- Aria Operations for Logs / VCF Operations for Logs
- vSphere Kubernetes Service
- Supervisor
- ESX hosts
- VMware Tools
- Virtual machine compatibility
- vSAN on-disk format
- vSAN File Service
How to validate your exact path
- Check the source and target builds in the Broadcom Interoperability Matrix (upgrade view).
- Run your inventory through the official VCF Upgrade Planning Tool linked from TechDocs.
- My write-up of the VCF 9.1 interactive upgrade planning tool walks through using it.
- Read KB 440630 for known issues before each step.
