VCF 9.1 Pre-Deployment Checklist

Short answer: this VCF pre-deployment checklist lists the 97 checks to finish before you run the VCF Installer for a new VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1 or 9.1.1 fleet: licensing, installer and depot, hardware, ESX host preparation, network, DNS, NTP, the 9.1 fleet components, firewall, certificates and passwords. Every line links to the Broadcom TechDocs page, KB article or installer API reference it comes from. Tick items as you go: your progress stays in your browser. Switch the model to Simple to hide the HA-only lines, and copy the result as Markdown for the change record.

What this VCF pre-deployment checklist corrects

Most VCF checklists in circulation were written for 4.x, 5.x or 9.0. However, when you check them against the 9.1 documentation, several common lines turn out to be wrong or outdated. As a result, this VCF pre-deployment checklist replaces them:

  • “Minimum 4 hosts.” Only for High Availability. A Simple deployment needs 3 hosts on vSAN or 2 on NFS or Fibre Channel.
  • “HA or PoC.” The 9.1 installer offers Simple and High Availability.
  • “DNS search domain on every ESX host.” The 9.1 host preparation steps say to leave Custom DNS Suffixes empty.
  • “SDDC Manager call-home for licensing” and “host entitlements.” VCF Operations talks to the Business Services console, and VCF is licensed per core (at least 16 per CPU). In addition, the installer has no license step at all, so you have 90 days of evaluation.
  • “Download token.” In 9.1 the online depot uses an activation code tied to a Software Depot ID (KB 443647).
  • “Collector node FQDN.” 9.1 deploys a cloud proxy; it also adds the License Server and four VCF Management Services FQDNs that older lists miss.
  • “Same 15-character password everywhere.” The installer API sets different rules per account, from 8 to 20 characters for vCenter SSO to 15 to 64 for VCF Automation.
  • “Port 443 from the installer to the hosts.” The workflow also uses SSH and ICMP to the hosts (KB 442379).

How to use the VCF pre-deployment checklist

  • Start with the workbook. First, download the Planning and Preparation Workbook for your exact 9.1.x release and fill it in. Most checks confirm a value from it.
  • Pick the model. The selector hides the HA-only lines for a Simple deployment. Lines tagged “if used” apply only when you deploy that option on day 0.
  • Work outside in. Licensing and depot access take the longest to arrange. Next come hardware and the network, then DNS and NTP. Finally, run the installer.
  • Keep the evidence. “Copy as Markdown” exports the checked state for the change ticket; the companion VCF JSON Builder turns the same values into the installer JSON spec.
